Adopt a Reef

Realizing the impact of coral reef degradation many companies, NGO and governmental agencies stepped forward in lending their resources in its rehabilitation.
The Ocean Quest adopt a reef program let willing sponsors to take part in the coral reef rehabilitation. Corals are living organisms that is the key contributor to shelter and sustenance to marine species. In recent years degradation coral reefs is identified as the major cause of declining of fish stock as well as other valuable marine resources. However, due to the existence of corals in the undersea environments its conservation is limited to those with skills and ability to dive to take the role of rehabilitation. Realizing the impact of coral reef degradation many companies, NGO and governmental agencies stepped forward in lending their resources in its rehabilitation. Among the processes are educational programs for coral reef “gardening”. For this education Ocean Quest invented a system it called the Coral Propagation Program (CPP) that includes education and techniques which allows everyone to take part in the process.

How to Adopt A Reef Program Works

Having a proper segmented nursery that is open for adoption allows people or companies to help through sponsoring the plots for rehabilitation. Ocean Quest shall publish the names of the sponsors in their website and all its other media and publication domestically and abroad. Individual sponsors who wish to adopt may want to consider the “Adopt a Coral” program. A quarterly report on progress of the coral rehabilitation work shall be submitted to the sponsors in form of research and monitoring data as well as in documentary video of the progress of the project.

Every sponsors shall continue to receive the reports for a period of 36 months. Sponsors may or may not want to include their employees in the educational part of the program. If the sponsor decides to include the educational part for their employees or as their corporate social responsibility program it can be arranged accordingly and the cost shall also reflect in the sponsorship. Costing of the Adopt A Reef Program is calculated on the size of the nurseries that the sponsors require of willing to sponsor. Cost of adoption of a reef begins from 135 USD per square meter per year. Minimum size in the Adopt a Reef program is 1 plot of 10 square meters. Minimum duration of adoption is 3 years.

The Adopt a Reef Sponsership Plan

The sponsorship plan is designed for sponsors to put together a realistic plan according to their requirements. They may decide what they can include or exclude from the Adopt a Reef Plan and the education plan that includes some training like the Coral Propagation Workshop or the Coral Propagation Course.

Long Term Adaption Plan

Long term adoption plans of two terms or more receives training as part of the Adopt a Reef program. This is included in the plan. Long term adopting shall be part of the coral transplantation program. When the corals reached suitable size they will be transplanted to the damaged reefs. Therefore, Ocean Quest includes the training as part of the long term adoption plans.

Short term adoption plans of one term (36 months) did not include training.

Educational Activity

Educational activity is optional and it includes Coral Propagation Workshop and Coral Propagation Course. Sponsors may choose to engage their employees or members of the community in coral propagation training. The two core training programs offered in this plan are:

1. Coral Propagation Workshop

2. Coral Propagation Course (also available in e-learning)

Additional continuing education program also offered for long term sponsors is:

3. Coral Propagation Trainer Course

The sponsor may choose to exclude the training part of the Adopt a Reef Sponsorship Plan but instead focus on the adoption and research only. In this instance in is considered as partial sponsorship and all the coral propagation activities is carried out by Ocean Quest researchers.

Reef Adoption Programm

This is the core part of the Adopt a Reef Program which consists of sponsorship of a designated coral nursery area named after the sponsor. Size of adoption sponsor is reflected in the size of the nursery in square meters (m²). Minimum adoption size is 10m² or one (1) plot. Minimum duration of sponsor is 36 months. During the 36 months the sponsor shall receive report on progress of the coral nursery and transplantation activities. The report is submitted to the sponsors every quarterly including monsoon months. Allocated plots of the nursery shall be named and marked under the name of the sponsors for the entire period of the sponsorship.

Research Plan

Research plan is the main program content of the Adopt a Reef Sponsorship Program. This is the most important part of the sponsorship program because it not only provide monitoring and maintenance of the coral nurseries but it also developed new and more advanced techniques and methodology for future of coral reef rehabilitation. There is no other program for coral reef research and restoration in the world today that is as comprehensive as the Ocean Quest – Adopt a Reef Program. The techniques, materials, education and methodology used is authentically developed, copy righted and patented by Ocean Quest. This is the reason we offer the adoption period for all sponsors as a 36 month program. In this period the sponsor shall be able to see the progress and development of our research and be part of our achievement.
